Ethan Frome How To Have A Great Day Everyday
Bill Brooks, CEO, The Brooks Group

The year 1981 was a great year for me. How was it for you? That was the year my wife, son and I moved to Greensboro from upstate New York. We couldn’t believe the deep blue sky, moderate winter temperatures, clean and neat neighborhoods, upbeat attitude of the people and the speed with which we made friends.

And every day since then has been a great day! Every day I get up and look at our beautiful area I have to pinch myself to believe I’m here – almost in heaven! How do you have just as good a day everyday in sales? When you face refusal, rejection, ups and downs, demanding customers, problems, long hours and all the rest?

Let’s look at 10 powerful ways for you to have a fantastic day regardless of the problems or difficulties going on in your life. Let’s get started.

  • Expect to have a great day.
It has been said that Abraham Lincoln once put it best when he said, "Every day you decide to have a good day or a bad day. And either way you’re right!" The way you think attracts the exact same things you think about. Expect good things and they will happen. Expect the opposite and that will happen to. Remember, you create your own world and it all begins with thoughts and expectations. Good or bad.
  • Manage your day around objectives instead of activities.
Remember, it’s not what you do, but what you accomplish that is important. Start to look at accomplishment rather than activity. At results instead of reactions. Be more concerned with the tangible and measurable achievement of specific objectives rather than just being busy. Start to feel good about the outcomes you achieve instead of the activities you undertake.
  • Get a victory early in the day.
There’s an old statement that says it best. As goes the first hour of the day goes the rest of the day. What does that mean? Simply this. Tackle a difficult, demanding, even unpleasant task as early in the day as possible and the rest of the day will be great! Do something you feel good about completing as early as possible – get a victory!
  • Get sufficient rest and maintain a proper diet.
Your body needs three things to function well. Rest, oxygen and food. Rest is essential for peak performance. Oxygen for life – but food will determine your level of sustained performance. Remember the old sawe "You are what you eat!" Skipping meals, eating all the wrong things and loading up with junk food are things you can do and get away with for a short time. But not for long. Remember, a good day always starts the night before.
  • Don’t adapt the negative attitudes of those around you.
It’s old, but true. Others around us have a direct impact on us. We tend to be most influenced by those with whom we surround ourselves. Either make the decision not to listen to them or not be influenced by them – or to either avoid or leave them. It’s as simple as that.
  • Understand that attitude drives habits and habits drive behavior.
Everything really does start with attitude. Are things problems or opportunities? Is the world loaded with prosperity or poverty? Do we cooperate or have conflict? Are you destined for success or failure? It all starts with attitude and that attitude fuels or foils all of our best efforts.
  • Celebrate your victories but don’t covet them.
Fame is as old as the headlines. Victories and successes are significant. And, in many cases, may be what life is all about. However, to live in the past and relive old glories or victories can be just as debilitating as never having had any victories at all! You will only be as effective as you face the next hurdle and successfully maneuver your way around your next opportunity.
  • Learn to be administratively adept and organizationally competent.
Don’t be a dreamer who can’t implement anything. By the same token, don’t be so consumed with detail, accuracy and analysis that you are frozen. Master the ability to move paper, projects and priorities across your desk to reality. Don’t spend your time in the morass of clutter and confusion. Always remember, "Clutter breeds confusion and confusion drives chaos."
  • Be a positive contributor instead of a complaining detractor.
Resolve to contribute to a positive, productive atmosphere. Always add something good and positive to the mix. Do your best to bring value instead of venom. Understand that just as others influence you, you, too, influence other people. Do your best to make that contribution positive and productive.
  • Resolve that everyday you will do everything you can to enjoy, savor and remember that day.
Each day has the possibility of being your last. Fate makes no promises to any of us. Do your best to have no regrets about things you can control. What are those things? Loving others, telling them that you do, making a positive contribution to the world, making your place in the world for your posterity – and much, much more. Each day presents options, choices and opportunities. What you choose to do with those things is your choice. Having a great day – or a bad one – is, quite often a matter of choice. "You make your breaks" is an old, old piece of advice. I, for one, believe it’s true. How about you?
